SIBO – The New IBS

SIBO or Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth is a relatively new diagnosis.  SIBO essentially means an overgrowth of normal or abnormal bacteria/fungus in the small intestine that results in IBS / IBD type symptoms such as bloating, pain, weird bowel movements and indigestion.

SIBO can be caused by:

Antibiotic use

Alcohol use

Food Poisoning

or any other assault on the digestive system.

Diagnosis of SIBO is confirmed by a simple breath test and clinical intake at Nature Doctors.  SIBO can result in malabsorption and fatigue syndromes with symptoms such as low energy, hair loss, irritable bowel symptoms amongst many others.  SIBO is often confused with food allergies.  Quite often, treatment will involve an irradication phase using antimicrobrials.  Probiotics are often not helpful and can sometimes worsen the symptoms.
