Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a treatment that is given through injections.  This therapy is often used for chronic joint pain but can also be used for sports injuries.    While the medicine that is injected can vary depending on the case, dextrose (a simple sugar ) is the main ingredient.  The most common joints to treat are knees and shoulders.

The mechanism of action is to induce an inflammatory reaction so as to recruit the bodies own healing mechanism to engage.  Often with chronic injuries, the healing response is stalled.  Prolotherapy stimulates this to re-engage.  In doing so, there is usually an increase in discomfort for a very short period of time which is completely normal and wanted.  This discomfort is the body recognizing an injury is there and mounts a healing response.
