  • ARTEMESIA / ARTESUNATE

Artemisia vulgaris or absinthum is a traditional medicine for parasites, including malaria.  Chinese doctors call it Quinghao. It is very useful in cancer.

  • Wormwood herb relieves constipation, particularly moving the upper GI tract. It is a key component of  #42 capsules for severe constipation, as seen in patients on opioid narcotic pain-killers.  It also rebalances gut flora (probiotic organisms).
  • Increases bile flow, detoxifying the liver.
  • Removes many intestinal worms and parasites.
  • Reduces inflammatory cytokine growth promoters.

Artemesia annua or sweet wormwood is the source of Artemisinin and Artemether, new ideas in cancer treatment.

Artemesinin:

  • Artemisinin is a hormone balancer, particularly reducing excess estrogen and prolactin. It is best studied in breast cancer.
  • Iron ions activate Artemesinin, which cancer cells accumulate. Cancer cells have abnormally high numbers of surface receptors for tansferrin, to uptake the excessive levels of iron they need to proliferate. Dihydro-artemisinin has a peroxide bond activated by iron to generate hydrogen peroxide.  This stresses cancer cells which are always catalase deficient.  The high-valent oxo-iron species create a cascade of reactive oxygen species called endoperoxides, depolarizing the mithochondrial membranes and disrupting the electron transport chain.  Cancer cells are approximately 100 times more susceptible to dying from artemesinin than healthy cells.
  • Induces apoptosis and slows growth in fibrosarcoma.
  • Inhibits angiogenesis, disrupting the blood supply to tumors.
  • Targets translationally-controlled tumor protein TCTP.
  • Inhibits cysteine protease enzyme, and also a SERCA-type calcium transporter enzyme.
  • It has very short period of action, clearing the bloodstream in about 2 hours.
  • There is evidence showing that the liver rapidly increases its ability to get rid of the drug, so that after a week it is difficult to achieve therapeutic blood levels. Also, the iron levels are largely depleted in the cancer cells after a week.
  • Intermittent dosing also allows the cancer cells to recharge with iron, which the artemesinin will then burn up into deadly peroxidesSynergistic with intravenous vitamin C, amplifying the peroxide stress.
  • It may synergize with butyrate, which is produced by gut bacteria acting on fiber such as psyllium husks.
As lactoferrin sequesters iron away from tumor cells, this may also prove to be a useful support.

Contraindications:
Sedentary lifestyle – works best in those more physically active
Smokers – must be off tobacco at least 6 months
Radiation therapy or surgery – wait until 2 months after – radiosensitizer and antiangiogenic.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Other forms of artemesia under investigation for use in cancer:

Artemether:   1 mg /kg BW  for 8 weeks. Usual adult dose is 40 mg twice daily, but it can all be taken in one dose.  This is the more toxic form, and the limiting factor in using combination products. Take well away from food, with whole milk, ice cream, etc.   After 8 weeks if responding, continue using it but every second day only, for another 3 to 4 months.   Periodic use for up to 2 years can be considered, 5 days on and 5 days off.

Synergize with 250 mg vitamin C and 200 IU vitamin E at breakfast and lunch.

Artemix: Combines artemether, artemesinin and artesunate.  Usual dose is 1 capsule twice daily, as for artemether. Said to be easier on the liver than plain arthemeter.

What is Chelation Therapy?

Chelation Therapy is an intravenous detoxification therapy that prevents and/or reverses the progression of numerous types of chronic disease.

The name chelation comes from the Greek ‘chele’, meaning claw, which refers to the ‘claw-like’ structure of the organic chemical ethylene diamine tetra-acetic (EDTA).

EDTA is a man-made amino acid, and has a particular affinity for toxic heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, aluminium and lead, as well as other positively charged ions. It grabs these substances in the body and secretes them as bodily waste.

What Conditions are Treatable with Chelation?

Historically, Chelation was used to treat acute lead poisoning.

Heavy metals have been implicated in a number of chronic disease processes resulting in kidney damage, immune system impairment, neuronal damage, hormonal impairment and autistic spectrum disorder.

Chelation has also been shown to be of benefit in patients who are suffering from any of the following:

  • Arteriosclerosis and sequelae such as: angina, myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular disease of the legs and feet in smokers and diabetes, stroke, impotence from erectile dysfunction.
  • Elevated LDL cholesterol
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Tinnitus, dizziness and Meniere’s disease
  • Nocturnal leg spasms
  • Emotional instability
  • Impaired hearing, eyesight and taste
  • Impaired memory and concentration (including Alzheimers and Dementia)
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Sclerodermia
  • As prevention in patients with a family history of cardiovascular disease
  • To reduce heavy metal burden and improve overall sense of wellbeing
  • Atherosclerotic Diseases: There is much controversy about the efficacy of chelation therapy for thickened arterial diseases. Many claims have been made for its value in breaking down calcium based arterial plaques, which are responsible for arterial blockages. Clinically it has been shown to be a relatively non-toxic and low-risk therapy, with longer-term benefit for patients faced with undergoing bypass surgery.

Patients who have benefited from chelation therapy often show improvements for some time once the therapy has been stopped. These prolonged benefits speak to the detoxification effects of chelation therapy.  Once the body’s toxin burden has been reduced, it becomes better able to engage its own natural healing process.

What are the Side Effects of Chelation Therapy?

Common: the possibility of a slight burning sensation at the site where the EDTA is delivered into the vein.
Rare: fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
Extremely Rare: heart failure, a sudden drop in blood pressure, abnormally low calcium levels in the blood, permanent kidney damage, and bone marrow depression (meaning that blood cell counts fall). Reversible injury to the kidneys, although infrequent, has been reported with EDTA chelation therapy. Other serious side effects can occur if EDTA is not administered by a trained health professional.

What Should I Expect During Chelation Treatment?

  • Prior to your treatment, your doctor will perform a thorough medical history as well as a screening lab test. You may also be asked to do a urine heavy metal test.
  • Treatment consists of administration, over a 1 hour period, of an intravenous solution consisting of CaEDTA, various vitamins and minerals and either sterile water or normal saline.
  • Every fourth treatment, a vitamin and mineral replacement bag will be administered to replenish nutrients lost during the chelation treatments.
  • The frequency of treatment is once or twice/week for up to 30 treatments. Treatments will then be reduced to 4-5 times/year for maintenance.
  • During the course of treatment, diet and lifestyle recommendations will be made to ensure you are achieving optimal health.

What is intravenous Vitamin C (IVC)?

High doses of Vitamin C are administered via an intravenous (IV) drip. The IV route allows much larger concentrations of vitamin C to circulate in the blood than is possible by taking oral vitamin C supplements.

What is it used for?

IVC is most commonly prescribed to:

  • Chronic or acute viral or bacterial infections
  • Improve quality of life in patients with cancer who may or may not be undergoing chemotherapy
  • Reduce cancer-treatment related symptoms including fatigue, nausea and lack of appetite
  • Slow cancer progression

Does IVC work?

Preliminary human studies consistently show that IVC, alone or in combination with standard treatments, can reduce cancer symptoms, treatment side effects and improve quality of life. IVC should not be considered as a cure for cancer.

A few small studies have looked at IVC in combination with standard care. In line with results from lab studies, these human studies show that IVC plus chemotherapy can slow cancer progression by reducing tumour size and decreasing tumour growth rate, as compared to chemotherapy alone.

How does IVC work?

Lab-based studies indicate IVC increases the production of hydrogen peroxide in the blood stream, which has been shown to cause cancer cell death while leaving normal cells unharmed. As opposed to Vitamin C taken orally, high doses of Vitamin C administered through an IV behaves as a pro-oxidant rather than an anti-oxidant and leads to the generation of free-radicals, adept at killing cancer cells.

Cancer cell lines that have exhibited sensitivity to the high doses of Vitamin C that are possible through IV delivery include lymphoma, glioblastoma, bladder, prostate, liver, breast, cervix, ovary, colon and pancreas.

What are the side effects of IVC?

Side effects are mild and rare in most patients. Possible examples include transient dehydration related symptoms such as headaches, abdominal discomfort and dizziness.

Is IVC safe?

IVC should not be administered to patients with renal failure, a history of kidney stone formation or those with a deficiency of the G6PD enzyme. Please contact your healthcare provider to discuss whether you are a good candidate for IVC therapy. IVC should not be considered a viable replacement for chemotherapy.

What is the recommended dose of IVC?

The goal of IVC treatment is to achieve a level of Vitamin C in the blood stream of approximately 22mM (400mg/dL). Patients at the Nature Doctors typically receive between 25g and 100g per infusion to achieve these levels. Extensive data show that doses up to 1.5g/kg of body weight are safe in a professionally monitored environment.
Treatments are generally administered 1-3 times per week during active treatment, and less often during a maintenance phase. Each treatment can last between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the dose.
